For the International Munich Lectures in Teacher Education Research of the summer term 2026, Prof. Louise Ohashi, Gakushuin University Tokyo will offer a lecture to provide insights into her innovative and transformative research.

GenAI for Educators: Insights from Research, Support for Practice

Generative AI (GenAI) is rapidly transforming education, bringing both opportunities and challenges. This session explores how educators can meaningfully and critically engage with GenAI and guide their students. The first part introduces the presenter’s research, including findings from a study on ChatGPT conducted with over 2,500 Japanese university students (e.g., their experiences using it for L2 learning and their views on teacher use and roles), action research from a course on AI and L2 education, and key points from a chapter on AI ethics (Ohashi & Hubbard, 2025). The findings suggest that although GenAI has a role in education, it should not be overemphasised, and teachers remain central. The second part is more interactive, featuring Q&A and guided discussions. Through attending, participants will gain a clearer sense of how to integrate GenAI into their teaching in principled and practical ways, along with concrete ideas to take back to their own classrooms. The session affirms the importance of GenAI literacy for both teachers and students and emphasises the evolving role of teachers in the changing educational landscape.

Dr. Louise Ohashi is a professor at Gakushuin University, Tokyo, who specializes in SLA and language education. Her key research areas include learner autonomy, motivation, edtech, and GenAI.
